Dubbed by media as the worst storm in decades the UK has seen, the Storm Arwen has caused massive destruction to people and property. The combination of rain and high wind as a result of the storm has left in its wake damaged outbuildings, damaged roofs, damage caused by fallen trees and damaged fences.

Storms leave fences especially vulnerable. What’s more, the wood will begin to rot in no time owing to the damage and damp. A damaged fence must be repaired at the earliest. So what should you do if this deadly storm has damaged your fence? Should you fix the damage yourself or hire a professional fencing service?

Here’s our brief guide.

Assess the Extent of Damage

Begin by assessing the extent of damage. This will allow you to understand whether it’s a DIY job or a job that’s best left to professionals. If the damage is extensive, it’d be more cost-effective to replace the fence.

Check the wooden fence for signs of discolouration, rot, cracked or broken panels and insects. Other signs include splintering and warping. If the fence was submerged in water, it’s vulnerable to mould and rot.

Fence Repair

Sometimes, fixing a broken fence could prove to be costly and time-consuming. If you intend to mend the damage on your own, you must have access to the necessary tools and equipment. Even if you do take up the repair work, you may not be able to restore it to its former glory.

Moreover, if the damage has been extensive, you are essentially working with weak fencing that won’t serve its purpose.

Fence Replacement

After a storm damage, your fence could be too weak to repair. The forceful impact of heavy rainfall and high winds can permanently damage a fence no matter what it’s made of. As a thumb rule, if the repair work requires replacing 20% or more of the fencing materials, you are better off investing in a new fence.

You must also consider the cost of the repair work. Some common repairs include filling holes or cracks, replacing rotted boards and repainting. If the repair and maintenance work will end up putting a dent in your pocket, it’s better to replace the fence entirely.
